Membership Benefits

Mothers First offers a variety of activities and opportunities to its members, enabling them to meet other mothers and stay intellectually engaged.

Support Groups

Mothers First sponsors regional groups throughout the Washington metropolitan area to provide support and encouragement for at-home mothers, through the following activities:

Morning Meetings — Most support groups meet one or two mornings each month. Group leaders focus on a specific topic for a portion of the meeting, and then open the floor for attendees to discuss their own parenting issues and concerns. Children are welcome, and mothers are asked to bring a few quiet toys to share.

Field Trips — Individual support groups schedule daytime field trips each month to places of interest to young children and mothers with babies.

Mom's Night Out — To give mothers a chance to relax, talk and get to know one another better without the interruptions of children, most support groups also schedule evening social activities such as dinner or a movie once a month.

Book Clubs — To help members remain intellectually stimulated, several book clubs meet throughout the area, some in the morning with children and some in the evening without children.

To find out which support group is nearest you, see the locations page or contact us at 703-827-5922. New support groups are added as needed.

Special Interest Groups

Mothers First offers groups for mothers who share an interest. The current special interest group is one for Adoptive Moms; proposed new groups are for those who have suffered miscarriage and those who have children with reflux.

Monthly Lectures

Our lecture series is held one evening each month at an area library. Experts have addressed issues including toilet training, marriage after children, first aid, investment strategies and helping children through grief. Lectures are open to members as well as the general public. No children please, but nursing infants are welcome.

Newsletter

All Mothers First members receive the bimonthly newsletter. This publication includes a letter from the president, articles written by members, support group activity schedules, news of Mothers First events, classified ads and other items of interest to members. (Sample Newsletter - PDF)

Volunteer Opportunities

As a completely volunteer-run organization, Mothers First provides many opportunities for members to participate in the organization in some way. There are a variety of long- and short-term projects in which members can become involved, either by working from home or with others. Volunteering provides members with excellent opportunities to keep their business, communications and management skills sharp.
